Ben Spies has been on the MotoGP radar ever since he began to regularly challenge Mat Mladin in the AMA Superbike series. After three AMA titles he impressed with wildcard MotoGP rides for Suzuki in 2008 which included a sixth at the first Indianapolis race, but Spies decided to take a works ride in Superbikes with Yamaha for the 2009 season.
Nicknamed “Elbowz” for his peculiar riding style, he has been the stand-out rider of the year as he comes to terms with a new series, bike and tracks, winning the championship at the first attempt.
Spies will make the step up to MotoGP in 2010 with the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha team to ride with fellow Texan, Colin Edwards. With limited testing time available in the off-season however, Ben took advantage of the final race in Valencia as a wild card to get to grips with his 800cc prototype before his full debut season.
2010 was a fantastic year for Ben. He earned himself the MotoGP Rookie of the Year title and finished up 6th in the wolrd championship overall standings. In 2011, Ben will ride alongside 2010 World Champion Jorge Lorenzo for the Yamaha Factory Racing Team. No doubt they will both be a force to be reckoned with!
