Alvaro Bautista made his Grand Prix debut in 2002, the year in which he also took second overall in the Spanish 125cc Championship. The following year, he only managed 20th overall in the 125cc World Championship, but his season was highlighted by a fourth place finish at Phillip Island and a sixth at Valencia. That same year he clinched the title in his domestic championship.
2004 saw him moving up to seventh overall, after taking an impressive four podium finishes. After a disastrous 2005, the following season was Bautista’s best ever, as he broke numerous records on his way to eight victories and a maiden 125cc Championship. Still with the Aspar Team, he bumped up to the 250cc class in 2007 and with seven total podiums, he claimed the quarter-litre class Rookie of the Year title. The following year, Bautista was one of the hot favorites for the 2008 250cc title, but some bad luck early on and the tremendous form of unexpected rival Marco Simoncelli meant the Mapfre Aspar rider had to settle for the runner-up spot.
Bautista was again expected to be a challenger for the 2009 title and he made a strong start with wins in Japan and Catalunya. Towards the end of the season bad luck with crashes saw his challenge fade, and he finished fourth overall.
2010 saw Bautista riding for Rizla Suzuki alongside MotoGP veteran Loris Capirossi in the Premier Class earning himself the 13th position in the overall standings. Bautista will continue to ride for Suzuki in 2011 as the only team member.
